The Moodists was one of the nicest and heavy-cool bands in the wave of Australian artists that claimed space in the rock stage from 1980 and on.
In the colony of
Australian bands
which at the time
settled down in
London, the
Moodists
became
an
early
acquaintance
that lasted
for years
to come.
Their history
also seems
typical for many of the indie artists
who had a personal expression that they wanted to transform to commercial
success without compromises on or compromising their artistic aim.
The effect of an insufficient marketing muscle lead to an existence in poverty
and
a
state of fast forward jumping between (poor) indie record companies. Any halt
on that pending motion could mean you sank, usually into deeper trouble.
But the feeling deep inside urged them to keep on, as a kind of mental nourishment
that replaced the hunger from lack of real food (but honestly, beer and drinks
were more of a first hand choice in this rock'n'roll life, generally speaking,
Moodists was no exception). The good thing was that they never became fat and
lazy.
At the following pages there are some stuff from our meetings, and documents of this period. My ambition is not to present a chronological tale. More so that I've let the pieces emerge from that lovely threatening chaos which many times was the direct impression of the Moodists music. A mix between brutal give-it-all and a longing for nice and tidy order of both the story told and music played.
The way the music took hold and started to live its own life, was intoxicating. And I believe also for the band itself.
In the life of this very special band, Dave and Clare also became dear friends... Read on!
